Activity Is Not Impact

Many nonprofits proudly report how much they do.

Workshops delivered.
Meals served.
Events hosted.

Those numbers matter. They reflect effort, reach, and commitment.

But they do not answer the most important question.

What changed?

If your reporting stops at activity, your impact remains invisible.

“What difference did this make?”

Why activity feels safer to report

Activity is easier to count.

You can track attendance, events, and services without complex systems. Outputs require less follow-up. They rarely reveal uncomfortable truths.

Outcomes require more discipline.

They require asking participants what changed.
They require tracking behavior over time.
They sometimes reveal gaps.

That discomfort is often why organizations stop at activity.

But avoiding outcomes does not protect the organization. It weakens it.


The cost of confusing effort with impact

When leaders report activity as impact, three things happen.

Once a week, ask:

Write it down.
